She attended Indiana University and was a lifetime member of Delta Delta Delta and Tri Kappa sororities.

She was best known for owning and operating the Durbin Hotel in Rushville along with her husband for more than 50 years. She was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by former Gov. Otis Bowen, Hotel Operator of the Year by the Indiana Hotel Association, and twice named Business Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women of Rushville and the Rushville Chamber of Commerce.

While living in Rushville, she was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Mother's Club, the Sodality, Monday Circle and Symposium. She also served on the board of both the library and the Tuberculosis Association. She wrote a cookbook, now in its seventh printing, called "Recipes of the Durbin."

Since her husband's death, the Indiana Hotel and Motel Association has awarded an annual Leo and Mary Durbin Scholarship Grant as a tribute to their contributions to the hospitality industry.

"She was born June 27, 1901, at Oldenburg, the daughter of John and Magdaline Riedeman Ferkinhoff. She was married to Edwin Lamping Aug. 11, 1926, at the Holy Family Catholic Church at Oldenburg, and he preceded her in death April 17, 1938. She was a retired employee of Hillenbrand Industries.

"She is survived by one son, William Lamping, Oldenburg; two daughters: Sister Natalie Lamping, O.S.F., Cincinnati, and Mrs. Edgena Fieler, Hays, Kan.; two brothers: Ralph and Joseph Ferkinhoff, Oldenburg; two sisters: Mrs. Evialia Kirschner, Oldenburg and Mrs. Felicia Firsich, Batesville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

142 Carl E. Roell, 93, R. R. 6, Shelbyville, died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Heritage House Convalescent Center, where he had been a patient three years. He had been in failing health one year.
Mr. Roell, who was elected in 1935, 1937 and 1939, served three terms as a state representive. He had lived in the Mount Pisgah neighborhood in Shelby County since 1908 and was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church.
Born Dec. 6, 1885 in Oldenburg, a son of Balthasar and Elizabeth (Studer) Roell, he married on June 1, 1909, Lora A. Zobel, who died March 15, 1962.
Surviving are four children, Mrs. Charles N. (Dorothy) Fischer, R. R. 6, Shelbyville, Mrs. Mildred Webster, Shelbyville, Mrs. Ray (Helen) Vogt, Fairfield, Ohio, and Frank B. Roell, R.R. 6, Shelbyville; and 12 grandchildre and 26 great grandchildren. A son, Edward, died in 1936 and a daughter, Elizabeth, died in infancy. Four brothers and a sister also preceded in death.
Services will be at St. Vincent Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Joseph Laugel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Carmony Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. Friday and the Rosary will be recited there at 7:30 o'clock Friday evening.

143 Carl F. Fischer, 76, 2008 S. Riley Highway, died at 2:30 a.m. today at the Heritage House Convalescent Center.
Mr. Fischer, a lifelong Shelby County resident, had been a farmer and owner-operator of the Fischer and Fischer Fertilizer Sale, Waldron. He was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church.
A son of Frank and Elizabeth (Schaf) Fischer, he was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Liberty Township. He was married April 7, 1940, to Dorothy Senger, who survives.
Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. John (Lillian) Pollman, R. R. 6, Shelbyville. Three brothers preceded him in death.
Servicers will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent Catholic Church with the Rev. James Dede officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Carmony-Ewing Broadway Funeral Home, 232 W. Broadway. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby County Cancer Association. (Obit: Shelbyville News, Nov. 16, 1990)

144 Carl Joseph Fisher, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Fisher, died at their home in Shelby township at five-thirty o'clock this morning, of pneumonia, aged eight months and five days. The child had been suffering for four weeks.. The family will have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of the babe. It leaves two sisters, Lorena and Freda, and a brother, Earl. One brother, Bernard, preceded it to the heavenly home in 1910, and its grandfather, Joseph Anthony Minster, passed away the thirteenth of this month. It is survived by two grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Minster and Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher.
The funeral services will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic church at ten o'clock Wednesday morning, the Rev. Fr. A. Kaelin officiating, and the interment will be made in the St. Joseph cemetery in charge of M. G. Tindall. (Obit: The Shelby Democrat, Jan. 25, 1912 pg. 1)

Carol Ann Robbins, 63, Waverly, died on March 21, 2016, at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Carol was born on August 21, 1952, in Ottawa, Kansas, to Leonard W. and Freida A. Fischer Hermreck.

Carol graduated from Garnett High School in 1970, and went to the Gene Blake School of Hair Styling, in Topeka. She did hair in Ottawa, before buying the hair salon in Waverly in 1972. It was named Carol’s Beauty Shop.

On September 4, 1971, she married Dennis M. Robbins, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, at Emerald.

Carol was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society, in Waverly. She had served to terms on the Waverly City Council. She was instrumental in getting the Waverly Community Building constructed. She was very active in her church and community.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, and a son, Sean M. Robbins, on August 4, 2013.

Carol is survived by her husband, Dennis, her daughter-in-law, Lisa Robbins, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, three grandchildren, Chloe and Cooper Robbins, and Channing Ketchum, her brothers, Dale (Linda) Hermreck, Ottawa, and Glenn (Rebecca) Hermreck, Overland Park, her four sisters, Linda (Larry) Zwiener, Garnett, Wanda (Steve) Wilkinson, Overland Park, Lois (Hal) Newman, Manhattan, and Colleen (Rob) Snell, Burwell, NE, other relatives and friends. Carol’s first love was her church, her grandchildren, Immediate family and friends, and Lisa the daughter she never had.

Services will be Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the Waverly Gymnasium, Waverly, KS. The family will receive friends, Tuesday, 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., at the gym. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Kansas City Hospice House, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or the Coffey County Cancer Support Group, and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, P.O. 146 CARSTENS, JOACHIM "WILL," passed away at John Muir Medical Center; he was 91 years old. Born in Visselhovede, Germany, he immigrated to the USA in 1924. He lived in Oakland until 1964 and then in Pleasanton until 1976. He then resided in San Ramon for the last 25 years. Bill owned and operated Melrose Meat Market on East 14th St. in Oakland for 40 years. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, member of Board of Directors for 25 years Altenheim Retirement in Oakland. Mr. Carstens is survived by his loving family: beloved wife of 64 years, Beatrice Carstens of San Ramon, and cherished daughter, Judith Ann Carstens Murray of Napa. He also leaves behind 3 treasured grandchildren and 5 adored great-grandchildren. He has 2 sisters still living in Germany. Joachim was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. 147 Cecilia M. Belter, 90, Greensburg, died Thursday, March 19, 1992, at St. Vincent Hospital. Born on April 19, 1901, in Shelby County, a daughter of Frank and Cresentia (Fischer) Weintraut. On January 14, 1933 she married Edwin Belter, who preceded her in death on January 5, 1973. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors are a son, Donald Belter, Greensburg and three grandsons. One son, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. 149 Charles 'Charlie' William Mann, 82, Franklin, died Friday at Todd-Aiken Health Care Center, Franklin. He was the father of a Boggstown woman and brother of a Morristown man.
Mr. Mann was born April 7, 1913, in Monroe County to James A. and Martha J. (Fleener) Mann. He was married Nov. 13, 1933, to Mildred M. Perkins, who preceded him in death Jan. 19, 1959. He was married Feb. 20, 1965, to Eileen E. Fischer, who preceded him in death Aug. 10, 1994.
He was a former Whiteland resident.
Mr. Mann retired in 1980 from Todd-Justik, Indianapolis, where he was a truck driver for 20 years. He retired from farming in 1963.
He belonged to the Nineveh Christian Church and was a 50-year member of the Nineveh Masonic Lodge No. 316.
Survivors are: four daughters, Janet M. Gray, Boggstown, Sue C. Walker, Anderson, and Ruth A. Henderson, both of Franklin; a son, James Mann, Nineveh; two brothers, Delbert Mann, Morristown, and Maurice Mann, Cloverdale; two sisters, Hattie Ferguson, Franklin, and Maude Shutt, Carthage; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Two sons, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

150 Charles N. Fischer
Services will be at 10 am Tuesday at St. Vincent Catholic Church for Charles N. Fischer, 74, R.R.6, Shelbyville. Mr. Fischer died at 5:30 pm Friday at Brookwood Hospital, Orlando, FL., following a lengthy illness.
Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery, with the Rev. William Ernst officiating. Friends may call after 3 pm today at Carmony Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 pm. A lifelong Shelby County resident, farmer and seedman, Mr Fischer in 1938 founded the Fischer Seed Co. and was a pioneer in the hybrid see field. He was named World Corn King, the only person to capture the title six times, after which he judged many grain shows throughout the country. Mr. Fischer was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church, Indiana Crop Improvement Association and Varmints Club and was a former membrer of the Shelby County Merit Board. Born in Shelby County on Sept. 24, 1907, Mr. Fischer was a son of Frank H. and Elizabeth (Schaf) Fischer. On Sept. 19, 1933, he married Dorothy M. Roell, who survives.
Also surviving are four sons and one daughter, Thomas E. Fischer, Mark C. Fischer, both of R.R.#6, Shelbyville; Mrs. Elizabeth "Libby" Hudson, R.R.#5 Shelbyville; Leonard "Nick" Fischer , Greenfield; and James E. Fischer, R.R. #1, Waldron.
Other survivors are one sister and one brother, Mrs. John (Lillian) Pollman, R.R.#6 Shelbyville, and Carl F. Fischer, Shelbyville; 14 granchildren; and two great grandchildren. Two brothers preceded in death.
