    Rites Monday For Motel Operator, 76

    Edwin W. Belter, 76, well known owner and operator of the Belter Motel here for over 20 years, died at 7:30 p. m. Friday at his home at 128 South Michigan Avenue. His death, attributed to a heart attack was quite unexpected.
    Mr. Belter was born Feb. 24, 1896, at Batesville. He was the son of Fred H. and Bertha Haase Belter.
    Educated at Huntersville, Mr. Belter was a veteran of World War 1, serving overseas in France and Germany.
    For an extended period, Mr. Belter operated the Shell Service station at the intersection of West Main Street and South Michigan Avenue.
    Later he built the Belter Motel on Indiana 3 North, south of the present interchange on Interstate 74, making the first motel built in Greensburg.
    mr. Belter was a member of the board of directors of the Greensburg Development Corporation, which in 1946-47 constructed the industrial building on Indiana 3 and 46 West under a lease contract with The Williamson Heater Company. Currently, the building, which has been expanded, is owned by Bohn Aluminum & Brass Corporation.
    Mr. Belter was a member of the local Elks and Eagles lodges as well as the American Legion Post 129. He also was a member of the 40 and 8 at Shelbyville.
    On Jan. 14, 1933, he was untied in marriage at Shelbyville with Cecilia M. Weintraut, who survives.
    Surviving with the widow are two sons, Edward W. Belter and Donald F. Belter, both of Greensburg; four sisters, Mrs. Walter (Laura) Yorn and Mrs. Edward (Alma) Wernke, both of Batesville, Mrs. Miles (Clara) LeMasters, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Lillian Van Lehnden, Cincinnati; and four grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and cousins.
    Mr. Belter was preceded in death by a sister, Ester Applegate, and two brothers, August Belter and Fredrick Belter in infancy.
    Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Monday at the J. H. Porter and Sons Funeral Home here. The Rev. Joseph Laugel, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Vincent's Cemetery in Shelby County.
