Rudella Mae “Della” Venechuk, age 89 formerly of Portage died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the Lodi Good Samaritan Care Center in Lodi. She was born on December 11, 1923 in Alexandria, MN to Henry and Helen (Riemann) Kramer.

Rudella was united in marriage to Nicholas Venechuk on September 2, 1944 in Austin, MN; he preceded her in death on June 28, 1998. She resided in Mason City, Iowa, moved to Waseca, MN in 1952, then Sturgis, MI in 1966 before settling in Portage in 1973. Della was a homemaker, had worked for Columbia County Nurses Office and was a member and volunteer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, School and choir. She enjoyed bridge, singing, dancing, avid reader, family get togethers, traveling, shopping and especially loved her grandchildren.

Survivors include 10 children, Georgia (Harry) Redman of Faribault, MN, Nick (Mary) Venechuk of Rockford, MI, Judy (Ed) Chobot of Sturgis, MI, Jan (Craig) Chapman of Pardeeville, Tim (Cheryl) Venechuk of Healy, Alaska, Mike (Sally) Venechuk of Wilmette, IL, Bill (Jerry) Venechuk of Montello, Sara Grossman of Portage, Matt (Tammy) Venechuk of Surprise, AZ and Melissa (Dan) Mussehl of Verona; 27 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 1 sister Sylvia Twiss of Lincoln, CA, 1 brother Roland (Joyce) Kramer of Texas and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Peter, an infant grandson Jared, son in law Michael, sister Lou Ann and a brother Gene.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Portage with Father Mike Richel officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Portage. Friends may call at the Picha Funeral Home, Portage on Sunday from 4 – 6 PM and at the church on Monday from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Della’s name to the Lodi Good Samaritan Care Center.

"Barney Kramer (1856- ). He married Anna Ovel in 1883. They farmed at Petersburg and Rock Valley before moving to Ashton in 1900 and farming west of town for three years. In 1903 they moved to town and opened a Creamery on the east side of Ashton (about where Imhoff Oil Co. is now). It was the Kramer and Son's Creamery and his sons Mike and Joe helped. It was sold out in 1916".

"Barney Kramer was born in Hanover, North Germany, in 1857. He came to the United States in 1873 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. After working there for about five years, he moved to Dyersville, Iowa, and worked around Petersburg as a farm hand for a few years.

When he was 24 years of age, he met Anna Ovel, who was 17. Two years later they were married at the St. Peter's and Paul's Church at Petersburg.

They farmed at Petersburg for some years and three boys were born there - Herman, Mike and Joseph. The family moved to Rock Valley and four more children were born during the time they farmed there - Rose, Mary, Henry and Frank.

They sold their farm and moved to Ashton in 1900, farming west of town for three years. Barney Kramer then sold his farm and moved to town, where he became one of the successful businessmen of Ashton. He opened a Creamery on the east side of Ashton. It was the Kramer and Son's Creamery and operated by his sons Mike and Joe Kramer. It was sold out in 1916.

The Kramers left the Ashton area in 1940 and moved to California to join some of their children who had lived there for some years.

The oldest son, Herman, entered the priesthood and was ordained in June 1914 at the age of 30. He was a priest for 62 years and died at the age of 92. Fr. Herman Kramer was the author of a book called "The Book of Destiny". It is the interpretations of Revelations of St. John and the Apocalypse. His book is in the Vatican Library, and the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. This book is considered by the hierachy of the church as one of the great books of the Catholic Church.

Besides being the author of "The Book of Destiny", Fr. Herman Kramer wrote a great many articles for Catholic magazines. He spoke and wrote in eight different languages. Michael (Mike) Kramer lived and died in Fairmont, Minnesota. Joseph lived in and around Ashton till his death at age 36. Rose Kramer Wallrich lived in and around Ashton, Sioux City, Iowa and Oakland, California, where she is still living. Mary was a housekeeper for Father Jensen for many years. They retired to Oakland where he died and she is still living there. Henry lived in and worked in Iowa and Minnesota retiring in Mason City, Iowa. Anne Kramer Lewis lived in Sioux City and Oakland, California where she is still living. Frank spent most of his adult life in Oakland and passed away there. Leone was a nurse who worked in Sioux City, Iowa and Oakland, California and she is retired there".
