Funeral services were held last Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg for Mr. John Ferkenhoff 90, the oldest citizen of Oldenburg. He passed away at his home in Oldenburg on Saturday Sept. 15. He has been in failing health for 5 weeks.
Mr. Ferkenhoff was born in Iowa March 6, 1861. At the age of 2 years old he came here and was engaged in farming near Peppertown where he lived 50 years. He was united in marriage to Miss Magdalena Riedeman and the past 40 years were spent in Oldenburg. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. He lived with a daughter and Son-In-Law Mr. and Mrs. Ivo Kirschner.
Survivors include four sons and four daughters, William and Ed Ferkenhoff of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Ralph and Joe of Oldenburg, Mrs. Theresa Weintraut of Waldron, Indiana, Mrs. Euliala Kirschner and Mrs. Genevieve Lamping of Oldenburg, Mrs. Felecia Firsich of Batesville. He has 33 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two daughters Josephine and Martha also preceded him in death.
Mr. Ferkenhoff was a faithful member of St. Joseph Mens Society and Holy Name Society. Rev. Charles Miller officiated at the Requiem Mass and at the burial in Holy Family Church Cemetery. M. C. Weigel was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
The community extends its sympathy to the bereaved children for the loss of the father. Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. George Weintraut, Miss Mary Lamping and daughters, Helen and Matilda, Mr. William Shubert of Indianapolis, Mrs. Mayme Seller and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Weintraut, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Pollman, Mr. Charles Fischer, Mr. Carl Roell of Shelbyville, Indiana, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Weintraut and family, Mrs. Freda Ricke, Frances and Amanda Weintraut, Mrs. Harry Brades, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Froeling of Waldron, Indiana, Mrs. Joe Schwier and son Joseph, Mr. and Mrs. John Brunswick, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Feie and son all of Cincinnati, Dr. and Mrs. Rupp, Mr. William Ferkenhoff of St. Cloud Minnesota, Private William J. Lamping of Fort Hood, Texas, and A. N. James Firsich of Pearl Harbor.

He was a mechanic for Tenvoorde Motor Co. until retiring in 1952.

Mrs. Theresia Weintraut, 89, Waldron, died at 8 a. m today at the Waldron Health Care Center where she had been a patient 3 1/2 years. She had been in failing health several years.
Mrs. Weintraut belonged to the St. Vincent Catholic Church and St. Ann's Alter Society.
Born July 3, 1891 in Oldenburg, a daughter of John and Bernadine (Fischer) Ferkinhoff, she was married Aug. 16, 1916 to Albert Weintraut, who survives at Waldron.
Also surviving are four daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Maier, Cincinnati, Mrs. Cleopha Brandes, Fortville, Mrs. Olive Froehling, Greenburg, and Mrs. Dorine Woisiefer, Shelbyville, and three sons, George Weintraut, Vesta, Calf., Omer Weintraut, Waldron, and Mark Weintraut, Indianapolis.
Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Ivo (Eulalia) Kischner and Mrs Genevieve Lamping, both of Oldenburg, and Mrs. Felecia Firsich, Batesville; two brother, Joseph and Ralph Ferkinhoff, both of Oldenburg, 25 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. A daughter, two brother and two sisters preceded in death.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, with the Rev. James DeDe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Glenn E. Eulalia "Lolly" Kirschner, 94, Dreyerhaus Health Care Center, Batesville, Ind., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1994, in the Dreyerhaus Health Care Center.

Born June 8, 1898 in Franklin County, Ind., she was the daughter of John and Magdalena (Riedemann) Ferkinhoff. On May 17, 1927, she married Ivo Carl Kirschner in Oldenburg, Ind. He preceded her in death May 9, 1981. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg and the Holy Family Ladies Society. She also belonged to the Eagles Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in Oldenburg.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Martha) Feie of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sons, Thomas Kirschner and Allen Kirschner, both of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ed Kirschner of Batesville; one brother, Ralph Ferkinhoff, Oldenburg; one sister, Felicia Firsich of Batesville; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

The Rev. Humbert Moster will officiate Mass of Christian Burial Friday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg.

Burial will be in the Holy Family Catholic Church Cemetery in Oldenburg.

Friends may call at the Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

There will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Felicia A. Firsich, 89 years old, died Sunsday December 7, at Dreyerhaus Nursing Home, Batesville. She resided at 958 Highway 46 East, Batesville.

She was born in Oldenburg on July 25, 1908, the daughter or John and Magdalene (Riedeman) Ferkinhoff. She married Randolf Firsich on February 1, 1928, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greensburg and he preceded her in death on May 23, 1963. Marion Ferkinhoff, age 14, died this morning at 2:30 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Ferkinhoff, 620 Fifth avenue S. E. after a serious illness of two months. Marion was born in St. Cloud and attended local schools.
Besides her parents she is survived by two sisters and three brothers, Bernadette and Dorothy and Theodore, Leo and Paul, all at home.
She was president of the Camp Fire group Ekolela of Lincoln school.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids for Theodore Joseph Ferkinhoff, age 86, who passed away Sunday at his home. Rev. Steve Binsfeld, Rev. Ronald Weyrens and Rev. William Vos will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Sauk Rapids and one hour prior to the services Thursday at the church. Sauk Rapids American Legion Post #254 will pray at 7:00 p.m., followed by St. Cloud VFW Post #428 at 7:15 p.m., and parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home in Sauk Rapids.

Ted was born to William & Cecilia Ferkinhoff in St. Cloud, MN. He attended St. Cloud Technical High School until enlisting in the US Navy where he proudly served on the USS Intrepid during WWII. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to St. Cloud, finished his high school graduation requirements and began working in the construction field. Later he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis to fully develop his carpentry skills.

On June 6, 1953 he and Kathleen Guck were united in marriage and together, raised six children while living in Sauk Rapids. From 1952 to 1968, Ted worked in the carpentry field around the St. Cloud area. In 1968 he made a career change from swinging a hammer to instructing others on how to do it. With some reservations, he became a carpentry teacher at St. Cloud Vocational School being one of the lead instructors on the annual house building project. Over his 22 years as an instructor, he passed along to students his passion for quality work and using common sense.

In his retirement, he enjoyed yard-work, chopping wood, harvesting maple syrup, reading (especially WWII & History), coffee with the "Morning Coffee Crew" at Coborn's, attending various grandchildren's activities, visiting family and friends, and an occasional casino run with Kathy.

Surviving Ted are his wife of 60 years, Kathy; his children, Jeff (Theresa), Dean (Delaine), Matt (Lynne), Jane Rudy (Jeff), Lynn Gerchy (Craig Sauer), and Ruth Dorival (Chris); ten grandchildren; brothers, Leo and Paul; and several sisters-in-law along with many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Marian, Bernadette and Dorothy.

Ted, you will be greatly missed -- till we meet again!

Olivia J. Froehling, 92, passed away September 20, 2015 at Morning Breeze Nursing Home in Greensburg. She was born April 15, 1923 in Waldron to Albert and Theresia (Ferkinoff) Weintraut. Olivia graduated from High School and then attended the University of Cincinnati. She was married to Adolphe F. Froehling on December 1, 1945 at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1980. Olivia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the St. Lawrence Auxiliary, and the Linger-A-While Home-Ec Club, all in Greensburg. Olivia volunteered at Decatur County Memorial Hospital. She also loved to sew and cook. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially traveling and babysitting her grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home with a rosary service starting at 3:30pm. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 24 at 9:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. John Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Cemetery in Shelby County. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Church Building Fund.

Valeria "Val" Cecilia Gross, age 90, St. Cloud, MN, died Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House, St. Augusta, MN.

Val was born to Edward and Cecilia (Knese) Ferkinhoff in St. Cloud on December 25, 1924. She graduated from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud in 1943 and received her nursing degree (RN) in 1946 from St. Gabriel's Schoolof Nursing in Little Falls. Val married Robert Gross on September 3, 1946 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Cloud. She worked as a nurse at the St. Cloud Hospital, the VA Hospital and completed her career as the industrial nurse for the Burlington Northern Waite Park Car Shop, retiring in 1981.She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, VFW Women's Auxiliary, Waite Park American Legion, St. Margaret¹s Society of Christian Mothers of St. Mary's Cathedral, and volunteer for various parish activities.

Val is survived by her husband, Bob, and her children, Judith (Bruce) Moberg of St. Cloud, MN, Patricia (Dave) Senogles of New Brighton, MN, Sharon (Todd) Sommers of Allen, TX, David (Margie) Gross of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Brian (Sheela) Gross of St. Cloud, MN; 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, brother Jim (Marion) Ferkinhoff of St. Cloud, MN.

Allan A. Kirschner, age 78 of Batesville, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Born April 21, 1935 in Batesville, he is the son of Eulalia (Nee: Ferkinhoff) and Ivo Kirschner. After serving in the army from 1955-1957, he became a bank examiner/financial officer brought in to help troubled and failing credit unions. He retired after more than 30 years in the field. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1461, Knights of St. John Commandry #243 and Holy Family Church.

According to his daughters, in his younger days Al was a bit of a hell raiser. He would eventually settle down and faith became important to him. He credits his mother for this. A long time passion for him was model trains. He enjoyed putting displays together in his attic and was a member of the Uptown Whitewater Model Train Club. Apparently he also liked going to garage sales and thrift stores hunting for new treasures. It always impressed his family how organized he was and how easy it was for him retrieve or refer back to a document when he needed it. His morning coffee was a must and while he liked roast beef, potatoes and corn, he preferred pork chops and ham. He loved being with his family. Whether it was an impromptu gathering or the holidays, he treasured that time together. Christmas was his favorite. Not really a sports fan per say, he used to attend the Indianapolis 500 regularly with his daughters and developed into a Colts fan over the last 10 years. He preferred Big Band and Country music and something that always made his daughters laugh was that, "Dad liked to think of himself as a ladies' man."

He is survived by daughters Kim Hoffmaster of Lebanon, Ohio, Kelley Light of Fishers, Indiana; sister Margaret Feie of Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers Tom Kirschner of Greenfield, Indiana, Ed "Pork" Kirschner of Batesville and seven grandchildren. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 4th, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5th at Holy Family Church with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating. Burial will be the church cemetery.

Sister Natalie Lamping, OSF, 67, member of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 1994 in the Sisters of St. Francis Infirmary, Oldenburg.

Born July 12, 1927 in Oldenburg, she was the daughter of Edwin and Genevieve (Ferkinhoff) Lamping. She entered the convent Sept. 8, 1946 and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1952.

She was a retired teacher and administrator. She taught in Indiana in: St. Mark, Indianapolis (5/6 grade math), St. Mary Academy, Indianapolis (business ed 9-12), Rex Mundi High School, Evansville (principal), Reitz Memorial High School, Evansville, (assistant principal), Motherhouse, Oldenburg, acting director of retired/pre-retired and administrative assistant to director of minister to retired, Motherhouse, Oldenburg, team member of office of personnel service: Motherhouse, Oldenburg, membr of the general council.

In Ohio, she was at the Our Lady of Angels High School (now Roger Bacon); from 1958 to 1962, she was business ed teacher/department head and from 1962 to 1970, principal and from 1979 to 1981, principal.

Survivors include a brother, William J. Lamping, Oldenburg; a sister, Mrs. James (Jean) Fieler, Hays, Kan., and numerous nieces and nephews.

The mass of Christian burial will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Sisters of St. Francis Motherhouse, Chapel, Oldenburg, with Father Raymar Middendorf officiating.

Burial will be in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Chapel.

Other survivors include seven grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville. Glorian R. Koors, 78, Batesville, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at The Waters of Batesville.

Born Nov. 28, 1933, in Batesville, she was the daughter of Felicia (Ferkinhoff) and Randolph Firsich. She married James Koors Dec. 29, 1954, at St. Louis Catholic Church.

Glorian was a homemaker and member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271 Ladies Auxiliary and Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 Ladies Auxiliary.

Her family indicated that Mom was an excellent cook and baker. While everything she made was delicious, they said her pies were the best you could find anywhere. Along with Jim, she was active with Legion functions, but quiet time was spent on her porch swing or crocheting.

She liked watching "Jeopardy" and, although her family teased her, she also had a couple of soaps she enjoyed. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and she definitely loved having them around.

Glorian is survived by her husband; daughter Tress Zielinski, Batesville; sons Andy, Batesville, and Tony, Indianapolis; sister Iris Huneke, Greensburg; brother Jim Firsich, Greensburg; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Tammy Koors; and sister Mim Kerker.

Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 5-7 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Patricia Marie (Brandes) Barnett, age 51, Crawfordsville, Indiana formerly of Indianapolis and Fortville passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born January 21, 1958 at Fort Benjamin Harrison to Harry and Cleopha Brandes who preceded her in death.

Patty was a kind and compassionate person who was an inspiration to her family and friends. She was married to her devoted husband Paul on August 16, 1997. She was a loving mother and will be deeply missed by her two (2) daughters, Theresia, born in 1998 and Mary, born in 2000.

Patty is survived by five (5) siblings; a sister, Connie Brandes (Brownsburg) and brothers; Bill (Joan) of New Palestine, Ron (Linda) of McCordsville, Mike (Diana) of Jasper, and Bob (Louise) of Central Point, Oregon. Patty is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews, and seven (7) great nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Patty was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Crawfordsville. She was very active in all of her children’s activities, including Girl Scouts and 4 H.

Patty was a 1976 graduate of Scecina Memorial High School and later earned her Bachelors degree in Psychology from IUPUI. She was recently employed by Family Interventions Inc. in Crawfordsville.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 14, 2009 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Crawfordsville, IN. Calling will be at 9:00 AM to 12 Noon with the funeral to immediately follow. Hunt and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Bernard Scholarship fund.
