He was born Feb. 16, 1909 in Franklin County, Ind., the son of Valentine and Catherine Schuck Metzler. He was a member of the St. Mary's Church and the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Forrestors. He was a farmer. On Oct. 8, 1930, he married the former Mary Selm, and she survives; with four sons, Charles E. Metzler, Addison, Ill., Nelson C. Metzler, Conroe, Texas, Robert C. Metzler, Houston, Texas, and Richard R. Metzler, Beech Grove, Ind.; one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Marlene) Hirt, Greensburg; one brother, Raymond Metzler, Harrison, Ohio, one sister, Mildred Witt, Harrison, Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Steve Donahue officiating. Veenstra, 69, of Elgin, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Eulogy service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 284 Park St., Hampshire. Born Sept. 21, 1940, in Charlevoix, Mich., the son of the late Gerritt and Cornelia (nee Wassanaar) Veenstra, he died peacefully Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, due to complications from pneumonia. He married Patricia L. Otterbacher on June 20, 1963. Harold was a graduate of Western Michigan University and received a J. D. from Cornell University. He also honorably served in the Navy as a radar technician. Harold lived and raised his family in Hampshire for 40 years. He worked for many years in a managerial capacity in teh manufacturing industry, was a paramedic, and did tax and bookkeeping work. He was a proud volunteer for many years as an E. M. T. and paramedic for the Hampshire Fire & Rescue. Harold was an avid reader who loved to tell stories, some of which were true. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with his family, friends and many pets. He is survived by his loving spouse of 46 years, Pat; his children, Tim Veenstra of Eminence, Ky., Joe (Becky) Veenstra of LaCrosse, Wis., Dirk Veenstra of Hampshire, Anne (Mark) Harter of Elgin and Tom (Ayano) Veenstra of Shelby, N.C.; his grandchildren, Mike, Selya, Leo, Jack and Samuel; and many other family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. 165 | DEATH CLAIMS COUNTY NATIVE Complication Cause Death of Aldrich Weintraut, 48 Aldrich Weintraut, 48 year old Decatur county farmer and Shelby county native, died this morning at 7:45 o'clock. He had been ill since last December and his condition had been serious for one week. The son of Frank and Crecentia (Fisher) Weintraut, he was born in Shelby County on October 18, 1910. On April 3, 1934, he was married to Philomena Leising who survives with the parents and five children, Thomas, David, Daniel, Stephen and Rita Claire Weintraut all at home. Also surviving are one brother and four sisters, Ira Weintraut and Mrs. Regina Beyer of Waldron, Mrs. Cecelia Belter of Greensburg, Mrs. Florence Powell of Fairland and Mrs. Bernice Fisher of near Waldron. Mr. Weintraut was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the D. E. Carmony Funeral Home at St. Paul. 166 | Death Claims John Fischer Retired Farmer Succumbs After Five-Year Illness In Failing health for the past five years and in a serious condition for two weeks, John B. Fischer, 79, retired Shelby county farmer, died at his home in Hendricks township this morning. A native of Liberty township, Mr. Fischer was born on March 20, 1873, the son of Bernard and Elizabeth (Derkison) Fischer. On October 30, 1900, he was married to Katherine Minister who survives with four children. Earl Fischer and Mrs. Eileen Merrick at home; Mrs. William Woods of Franklin and Mrs. Edward Braunagle of Blue Ridge. A daughter, Mrs. Loriena Thoman preceded him in death and three sons died in infancy. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Frank Weintraut of Waldron; Mrs. Mary Weintraut of Cleveland, O., and Mrs. Anna Niese of Indianapolis. There are 11 grandchildren. Mr. Fischer was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and funeral services in charge of the Murphy Mortuary, will be held at the church Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. Rev. 168 | DEATH FOLLOWS LONG ILLNESS Rites Monday Morning For Frank Henry Fischer Frank Henry Fischer, 70, passed away at his home seven miles southeast of Shelbyville near Prescott Thursday afternoon after a long illness. He had been an invalid for twenty years. The son of Bernard and Elizabeth Fischer, he was born in Shelby township April 19, 1876. His marriage to Elizabeth Schlaf took place forty-one years ago. Mrs. Fischer died on June 29, 1918. Mr. Fischer was also preceded in death by three children. He was a member of the St. Vincent Catholic Church. Surviving are five children, Charles and Carl Fischer, of near Prescott, Frank Fischer, U.S. Army, who has just arrived in the states from the South Pacific, Mrs. Lillian (John) Pollman, of Liberty township, Robert, of Louisville; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Weintraut, of Liberty township, Mrs. Mary Weintraut, of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Anna Neice, of Plainfield; and a brother, John Fischer, of near Fairland. 172 | Dick Freriks died at the Grossman Hospital December 11 after an illness of six weeks. He had been suffering from a heart ailment for a number of years, but had been active in his work until this time. Dick Freriks was born on a farm near Orange City on July 26, 1886, the son of Dick and Mary Freriks. He grew up in this vicinity, and farmed most of his life in Sioux County. Surviving are the wife, the former Theresa Vellinga, eight children and seven grandchildren. The children are Donald of Alton, Mae (Mrs. Wilbur Mouw) of Holland, Mich., Margaret (Mrs. John Bloemendaal) of Hospers, Helen (Mrs. Randall Stover) of Hospers, William of Alton, Vernon of Alton, and Robert and Norma Jean at home. Also surviving are five sisters and three brothers. He was a member of the Reformed Church of Alton, and the funeral was held there Tuesday afternoon, December 165, with Rev. H. Hesselink officiating. Burial was in the Orance City Cemetery. 173 | DIED SUNDAY AT HOME IN COUNTY Nicholas Schaf Was Resident of Shelby County More Than Fifty Years Born in Dearborn County Nicholas Schaf, age seventy-nine, resident of Shelby county for more than half a century, died Sunday afternoon at one-thirty o'clock at his home in Prescott. His death was caused by complication of diseases. Mr. Schaf was one of the better known farmers of the southeast part of the county. He had lived on the farm where he died for forty-seven years. Mr. Schaf was a member of St. Vincent Catholic church. He was born in Dearborn county [October 28] 1846, and had been a resident of Shelby county since 1872. Mr. Schaf was married in 1868 to Miss Louise Kuntz. Ten children was born to them, six surviving. Besides the widow, Mr. Schaf leaves four daughters, Mr. Harry VanWay, of Shelbyville; Mrs. Louis Huffman, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Henry Rehme, of Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Lawrence Miller, of Prescott, and two sons, John Schaf, at home, and Frank, of Springfield, Ohio. Twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at nine o'clock at St. Vincent church. Burial will be made in the church cemetery, R. 174 | DIED TODAY AT PRESCOTT HOME Mrs. Louise Schaf, Age Seventy-Six, Was Resident of Town Half Century FUNERAL SERVICE MONDAY Mrs. Louise Schaf, age seventy-six, widow of Nicholas Schaf, and a resident of Prescott, Shelby County for fifty years, died Thursday morning at 6:45 o'clock at her home in Prescott. Her death was caused by a complication of diseases. Mrs. Schaf was well and most favorably known through the Prescott and Waldron community. She was born April 10, 1850 in Dearborn county, in November 1868, she was married to Mr. Schaf. His death occurred a few years ago. Ten children were born to them, six of whom survives. Mrs. Schaf had long been a member of the St. Vincent Catholic Church, east of Shelbyville. She leaves four daughters, Mrs. Harry C. VanWay, of Shelbyville; Mrs. Louis Hoffman, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Henry Rehme, of Rushville; and Mrs. L. W. Miller, of Prescott, and two sons, John Schaf, of Prescott, and F. L. Schaf, of Springfield, Ohio. Twenty grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Schaf also is survived by one brother, Louis Kuntz, of Shelbyville, and a sister, Mrs. Caroline Firsich, of near Prescott. 186 | Dr. Albert C. Strafuss 1928 - 2006 Mass of Christian burial for Dr. Albert C. Strafuss, 78, Lawrence, was Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial followed at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Chapman. Dr. Strafuss died Sunday, May 28, 2006, at his home. He was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Princeton, the son of Karl B. and Mary B. Fischer Strafuss. He served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1947. He attended Kansas State University and received a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1954. He also received a master's degree from Iowa State University in 1958 and a doctorate in veterinary pathology from the University of Minnesota in 1963. He was a faculty member at Iowa State and the University of Missouri before coming to Kansas State University in 1968. He retired as a professor of veterinary pathology in 1992. Dr. Strafuss was the author of more than 70 scientific publications, and a contributing editor and author to an avian disease manual, and author of a textbook, "Procedures and Basic Diagnostic Methods for Practicing Veterinarians." He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. He married Anne Marie Scanlan in Chapman. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include four daughters, Paula Strafuss, Rice Lake, WI, Kathleen Strafuss and Patricia Bauerband, both of Houston, and Mary Strafuss, Kansas City; a son, Thomas, Dallas; two brothers, Herman, Manhattan, and Anton, Horton; three sisters, Dorothy Finan, Blaine, Irene Wienck, Blue Rapids, and Esther Schultz, Topeka; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. 189 | Earl Fisher Found Dead Earl A. Fisher, 65, R. R. 1, Needham, was found dead at his home in Camp Joy around 4:30 p.m. Sunday by Deputy Sheriff Thomas Theobald and a neighbor, John Eickleberry. Eickleberry called sheriff officers when he learned that Mr. Fisher had severely lacerated himself across the hand twice, apparently with a razor blade, earlier in the afternoon. The victim's sister, Mrs. William C. Woods, told officers she had been at the home about an hour earlier and that she had bandaged his hand where he had cut himself. County Coroner Dr. Paul Inlow said Mr. Fisher apparently died due to severe bleeding and that death was self-inflicted. Mr. Fisher had been ill since sustaining a fractured hip Aug. 14 in a fall at the Greenwood Locker Plant, where he was employed. Born in Shelby County July 7, 1905, he was the son of John B. and Katherine (Minster) Fisher. Surviving are three sister, Mrs. Ed (Mary) Braunagel of near Rays Crossing, Mrs. William C. (Frieda) Woods, Franklin, and Mrs. Charles W. (Eileen) Mann, Whiteland. A sister and three brothers preceded in death. Services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bernard Burgert officiating. 190 | Edgar L. Niese, 63, of 1023 Newell St., died Wednesday at his home after an illness of one year. Born Jan. 18, 1904, in Shelbyville, Ind., Mr. Niese had been a resident of the area 22 years. A Metal caster at Chase Brass Co., Euclid, he had been an employee of the firm 25 years. On Oct. 25, 1924 he was married to the former Mary Miller in Richmond, Ind. Survivors include his wife, Mary A. (Elsie); one brother, William, Indianapolis, Ind., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral rites will be Saturday, 1:30 p. m. at the Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Home, Richmond, Ind. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond. He was stricken with an apparent heart attack in the office of the Belter Motel, Greensburg, where he was the manger. Among the survivors is a daughter, Renita Belter, Shelbyville. Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Greensburg. Burial will be in St. Vincent Church Cemetery here. Friends may call after 2 p. m. Belter Jr., 46, manager of the Belter Motel, was found dead late Friday night the victim of an apparent heart attack. According to police, Belter's body was discovered about 11:38 p. m. in the motel office by a customer, Monty Hancher, 529 W. First St. An anonymous telephone call brought Greensburg police to the scene where the body had been found sitting in a chair. Police then called county coroner, Thomas Porter, who later said Belter died of a heart attack and that there was no evidence of foul play in connection with the death. Mr. Belter was born July 3, 1933, in Greensburg, the son of Edwin W. Belter, who died Jan. 5, 1973, and Cecilia Weintraut Belter, who survives. he was the manager of the Belter Motel. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus and a veteran of the Korean coflict, having served in the army. In addition to his mother, survivors include one brother, Donald Belter, Indianapolis; one daughter, Renita Belter, Shelbyville; three nephews and several aunts and uncles. The services will be at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday in the St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in the St. Vincents Cemetery in Shelby County. Visitation will be after 2 p. m. 192 | Edward J. Braunagel, 86, 241 W. South St., former R. R. 6, resident, died at 7:15 a.m. today at his home. A lifelong Shelby County resident, Mr. Braunagel was a retired farmer. He had worked at the Admiral Corporation, retiring in 1962, and had also been a well driller. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. A son of Concard and Mary (Thebo) Braunagel, he was born Oct. 29, 1900, in Shelby County. He was married in St. Paul on Sept. 15, 1936, to Mary Fischer, who survives. Also surviving are sons, Joe Ed Braunagel, Indianapolis, and Frank Braunagel, Fairland; daughter, Mrs. George (Rosemary) Ducharn, Dekalb, Ill., Mrs. Jerry (Helen) Lux, Shelbyville, Mrs. Jose (Anna Marie) Gutierrez, Vevay, Mrs. Frank (Betty) O'Brien and Mrs. Robert (Rita) Whalley, both of Indianapolis, Mrs. Harold (Alice) Smith, Westport, and Mrs. Fred (Dianne) Papalco, Kailue, Hawaii; 26 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Frances Headlee, Shelbyville. 193 | EDWIN BELTER HEART VICTIM Rites Monday For Motel Operator, 76 Edwin W. Belter, 76, well known owner and operator of the Belter Motel here for over 20 years, died at 7:30 p. m. Friday at his home at 128 South Michigan Avenue. His death, attributed to a heart attack was quite unexpected. Mr. Belter was born Feb. 24, 1896, at Batesville. He was the son of Fred H. and Bertha Haase Belter. Educated at Huntersville, Mr. Belter was a veteran of World War 1, serving overseas in France and Germany. For an extended period, Mr. Belter operated the Shell Service station at the intersection of West Main Street and South Michigan Avenue. Later he built the Belter Motel on Indiana 3 North, south of the present interchange on Interstate 74, making the first motel built in Greensburg. mr. Belter was a member of the board of directors of the Greensburg Development Corporation, which in 1946-47 constructed the industrial building on Indiana 3 and 46 West under a lease contract with The Williamson Heater Company. Currently, the building, which has been expanded, is owned by Bohn Aluminum & Brass Corporation. Mr. Belter was a member of the local Elks and Eagles lodges as well as the American Legion Post 129. He also was a member of the 40 and 8 at Shelbyville. On Jan. 14, 1933, he was untied in marriage at Shelbyville with Cecilia M. Weintraut, who survives. Surviving with the widow are two sons, Edward W. Belter and Donald F. Belter, both of Greensburg; four sisters, Mrs. Walter (Laura) Yorn and Mrs. Edward (Alma) Wernke, both of Batesville, Mrs. Miles (Clara) LeMasters, Indianapolis, and Mrs. Lillian Van Lehnden, Cincinnati; and four grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and cousins. Mr. Belter was preceded in death by a sister, Ester Applegate, and two brothers, August Belter and Fredrick Belter in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Monday at the J. H. Porter and Sons Funeral Home here. The Rev. Joseph Laugel, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, will officiate.
