517 Obituary for Rev. Don "Gordon" Bloemendaal

REV. DON "GORDON" BLOEMENDAAL was born on June 24, 1937 to John and Margaret Bloemendaal near Hospers, Iowa where he was raised. He was the brother to Mary Miedema of Hull and Pixie Balt of Hospers. After graduation from high school, he attended Northwestern College in Orange City for one year and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. A few years after his discharge, Gordon attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He then became employed in Hospers for eleven years.

Gordon was called into ministry and returned to Northwestern College, graduating in 1973. The family then moved to Holland, Michigan where Gordon attended Western Theological Seminary and was ordained to the Gospel Ministry in the First Reformed Church of Hospers, Iowa on June 17, 1976. He served as Pastor at the First Reformed Church of Alexander, Iowa from 1976 – 1980, First Reformed Church, Rock Valley, Iowa from 1980 – 1986, American Reformed Church, Luverne, MN from 1986 – 1996, and as calling Pastor at the First Reformed Church, Sheldon, Iowa from 1997 – 2011, retiring on June 26, 2011.

Gordon and Barbara Hellenga were married May 31, 1957. Three children were born into their union: Bevan Lani Bloemendaal and partner Tony, Blythe Joal Bloemendaal and wife Trish and their 5 children and 1 granddaughter, and Bobette Dawn Walton and husband Fred and their 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Barbara's brothers, Brian Hellenga and John Hellenga and sister, Faye Hofmeyer, were also very much part of the family after both of their parents, Rev. Al and Margaret Hellenga passed away in 1959.

Barbara Hellenga – Bloemendaal preceded Gordon in death in 1996 as a result of Alzheimer's.

On June 24, 1997 Gordon and Marlou Van Klei were married and just celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary. Marlou's three children, Brenda Halverson and husband Ben and their 3 children, Shelly Kunkel and her husband Bob and their 2 sons, and Jill Kunkel and husband Brian and their son, quickly became a big part of the family.

Pastor "B" [as most people called him] was passionate about 2 things. The first was everything "family". It was clearly always family first every day. He carried with him the most selfless positive outlook on life and touched so many lives in loving and countless ways – from a kind word, a hug, a joke, a song and of course we will always remember those gleaming eyes and a smile that knew no end. The second was that he loved everything John Wayne!

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013 Gordon succumbed to his Lewy Body disease care at Sanford Luverne Hospital. He went to his eternal home at the age of 76 years and fifteen days.

Gordon's entire family would like to thank the staff members of both the Minnesota Veterans Home and the Sanford Hospital for their genuine love and support during this past year they tirelessly treat residents with such respect, care and compassion. To all of Gordon's friends [who are many] he spoke of you often with fondness…thank you. To Dr. Ceynowa who always knew that when he had an appointment with Pastor B. he was going to run late the entire day…thank you for being there through our Mom's journey and now through Dad's he had a very special place in his heart for you…thank you.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Gordon's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.

525 One of Shelby county's best known German citizens, Henry Anthony Runnebohm, passed away this morning at two o'clock at his home in Prescott, after having been ill for some time from Bright's disease. Mr. Runnebohm was a typical citizen of the fatherland, who settled in this county many years ago. Honest, industrious, frugal and in every way a good citizen, Mr. Runnebohm will be missed by many.
Henry Anthony Runnebohm was born in Bud Lohne, Amt Vechte, Germany, February 25, 1830, making him at the time of death seventy-nine years, eleven months and three days of age. He came to the United States in 1852, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. On June 7, 1853, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Matrose. The same year the young couple moved to Franklin county, Indiana, coming to Shelby county in 1867.
Upon coming to this county, Mr. Runnebohm moved to a farm, one-half mile north of St. Vincent's church, in Liberty township, where he remained until 1897, when he moved to Prescott, where he has lived until the grim angel, Death, removed him this morning.

526 One of the leading agriculturista and respresentative citizens of Shelby county, Indiana, is John Tilson Higgins, who was born here on July 12, 1855, the son of William E. and Mary (Wheeler) Higgins.
John Tilson Higgins received his education in the common schools of Shelby county, now known as the district schools. He went through all the grades and received a fairly good education for his opportunity, for he applied himself very carefully to his text-books. He remained on the old homestead, assisting with the work about the place until his marriage to Rose Dolan, a daughter of John E. Dolan and wife.
To Mr. and Mrs. John Tilson Higgins eleven children have been born, namely; the first and scond died in infancy; Richard Carter, born March 12, 1880, resides in Canada; Frank W., born January 12, 1882, married Victoria Weintraut; he is a salesman and is living in Virginia; Victor W. was born June 28, 1884; he is a scenic painter and lives in Chicago; Ambrose, born July 27, 1886, a graduate of the agricultural department of Purdue University, is living at home; Marie Cecelia, born July 15, 1888, is a teacher and is living at home; William Frederick, born January 27, 1890, is still a member of the family circle; Robert E., born October 2, 1891, died August 8, 1903; Teresa Portia, born March 17,1896, died March 15, 1909; John Tilson, Jr., born February 13, 1898.
After his marriage Mr. Higgins angaged in farming, which he had followed ever since in a most successful manner. He had always devoted considerable attention to stock raising, having a hobby for hogs, also the raising of fruit, and no small part of his yearly income is derived from these sources. He is a great breeder of Duroc hogs and always keeps some fine specimens of this variety. His model farm, one of the best in Shelby county, is located in section 6, Liberty township, being under a high state of improvement and well kept in every respect. He has a very attractive home, modern substantial and nicely furnished, also excellent bards and outbuildings; everything bout his place shows thrift and prosperity, and that a man of good judgment and progressive ideas has its management in hand; in short Mr. Higgins is one of the prominent men of Shelby county, being interested in whatever tends to promote the welfare of his fellowmen in this locality, and always ready to support all measures looking to the good of his fellow men. He is one of themost active workers in the Catholic church in this county, being a liberal supporter of the same. He has served on the Advisory Board of his township for two terms, and is now a member of the County Council. Mr. Higgins is a well read man, keeping abrest of the times in all matters and his conversation is enteraining. He and his family readily impress the stranger as being well educated and hositable. (The History of Shelby County, Indiana, by Edward H. Chadwick)

hallo,
